Skincare Routine Order: The Four Steps That Matter
A skincare routine isn't judged by how many products it has but by the order they go in. The rule fits in one sentence: thinnest to thickest. A thick texture applied first blocks everything that follows — the most expensive mistake, and the most common.
The four steps
1. Cleanse
At night, always. In the morning, plain water suffices for many skins — especially dry ones. A cleanser that leaves skin squeaking is too strong: that sensation means the protective film has just been stripped.
Hydrating Facial Cleanser
On damp skin, a minute maximum, with lukewarm water.
If there's makeup or sunscreen to dissolve, a cleansing oil comes before the cleanser — that's double cleansing, explained in this article.
2. Treat
This is the serum step: a concentrated formula that solves one specific problem. It goes on skin that's still slightly damp, which matters particularly for hydrating serums.
Which serum for which problem: the matching table is here.
3. Moisturise
The cream seals what came before. Without it, a humectant serum can actually dry skin out in dry air. This is the step oily skin skips — and precisely why it shines more.
Extreme Moisture Blend
For dry skin. On oily skin, choose the Oil Control Hydrator.
4. Protect — mornings only
Sunscreen is the only non-negotiable step in the whole routine, and the only one with a demonstrated effect on skin ageing. TORVIA doesn't sell sunscreen — we'd rather say so than sell you something else instead. SPF 30 minimum, every day, winter included.
Morning and night do different jobs
- Mornings protect: light cleanse or plain water, hydrating or niacinamide serum, moisturiser, sunscreen.
- Nights repair: makeup removal, cleanse, the evening active (acid or retinol, never both), moisturiser.
Exfoliating actives belong at night: skin isn't exposed to UV in the hours that follow, and cell turnover is more active overnight.
If you're starting from scratch
Three products are enough: a cleanser, a moisturiser, a sunscreen. That's it. Add a serum when a specific need appears, one at a time, two weeks apart. Otherwise, when something reacts, you'll never know which one to blame.
The most effective routine is the one you keep. An eight-step routine abandoned after ten days is worth less than a three-step routine kept for six months.
Frequently asked
Should you wait between steps?
A few seconds, until the previous texture is no longer wet on the surface. The multi-minute waits you sometimes read about rest on nothing.
Is a toner useful?
Rarely essential. Modern toners hydrate or lightly exfoliate — if your serum already does that, it's a duplicate step.
Eye cream: before or after moisturiser?
Before, on the orbital bone only. Its texture is generally lighter — so earlier in the order.
