Men's Skincare Routine: Three Steps That Stick
Most men have a face routine that amounts to one product: the soap in the shower. It works… until it doesn't — tightness after shaving, shine in the T-zone by midday, itching skin under the beard. Three products and two minutes settle most of it.
Male skin isn't a marketing argument
The differences are real and measurable. Under androgens, male skin is roughly 20 to 25% thicker, produces more sebum and has more active pores. It therefore ages more slowly at first, but shines more and forms more blackheads.
Above all, it takes a beating no other skin does: shaving removes part of the stratum corneum with every pass. That's an unintended daily physical exfoliation — hence the redness, the razor burn and the sensitivity that comes with it.
Step 1 — Cleanse, don't strip
Shower soap sits around pH 9 to 10. Facial skin lives at 5.5. Every wash with soap disrupts that acid mantle, which takes hours to rebuild — and skin answers by producing more sebum. That's the cycle behind the midday shine.
A pH-adjusted face cleanser, morning and night, settles it within a week.
Hydrating Facial Cleanser
On damp skin, morning and night. It doesn't replace shower gel — it's the other way round.
Step 2 — Moisturise, even if you shine
This is the step everyone skips, and the one that changes most. Skin deprived of water compensates with oil: the less you moisturise, the more you shine. A light texture applied after shaving also cuts redness noticeably.
Men's Face Moisturizer
Morning and night, including straight after shaving on patted-dry skin.
If you shine noticeably, a mattifying texture suits better — see our piece on oily skin.
Step 3 — The eye area, if that's your concern
Dark circles and puffiness are the first thing people notice on a tired face. Before buying anything, work out which of the three types you have — the mirror test takes ten seconds and saves you buying the wrong product.
Shaving, without the razor burn
- Always on warm, damp skin. The hair swells and cuts more cleanly.
- With the grain on the first pass. Against it, you cut below the surface: that's where ingrown hairs come from.
- A fresh blade. A dull blade drags instead of cutting — that's what creates razor burn, not the foam.
- Rinse cold and pat dry, never rub.
Shaving Gel
Clear texture: you can see where the blade goes, which matters for shaping a line.
If you wear a beard
The hair draws up your skin's sebum and spreads it along its length: the skin underneath dries out, feels tight and itches. Beard oil settles that in two to three days. How many drops, what motion, and why it won't make your beard grow: it's all here.

Frequently asked
How long does it really take?
Thirty seconds in the morning, a minute at night. A routine that takes longer won't get kept.
Is a “for men” product genuinely different?
Often it's mostly the fragrance and the bottle. The useful differences are texture — lighter, faster absorbing — and tolerance after shaving. A good unisex product does the job just as well.
What age should you start?
Cleanser and moisturiser: as soon as shaving becomes regular. The rest, when a specific need shows up — not before.
