Hair Oil: Before or After Shampoo?

Let's clear this up first, because it's the promise you'll see everywhere: hair oil does not make your hair grow. Growth happens in the follicle, under the scalp, and depends on genetics, hormones and general health. What an oil can do is stop the hair breaking before it reaches the length you wanted — which, from the outside, looks a great deal like faster growth. The distinction matters.

Two uses, two different effects

Before shampoo: a shield

Applied to dry hair thirty minutes to an hour before washing, oil partly penetrates the fibre and limits what the surfactant can strip out. This is the most useful application and the most neglected — especially if your shampoo is on the strong side, a subject we cover in our piece on sulfate-free shampoo.

Lengths and ends only. Your scalp doesn't need this treatment unless it's genuinely dry.

After shampoo: a finish

On towel-dried hair, one or two drops smooth the cuticle, cut frizz and add shine. Quantity is the only variable that matters here: go over, and the greasy look arrives immediately with no way back.

How many drops

  • Short hair: 1 to 2 drops as a finish, 4 to 5 as a pre-wash treatment.
  • Mid-length: 2 to 3 as a finish, 6 to 8 as a treatment.
  • Long or thick hair: 3 to 4 as a finish, 10 to 12 as a treatment, section by section.

Always warm the oil between your palms first, and start at the ends working up. Never the other way round — that's how you end up with flat roots and still-dry ends.

Which oil for which hair

Not all oils penetrate the fibre. Coconut and argan oil partly do; mineral oil and silicones stay on the surface — which isn't a flaw, just a different job: coating and protecting mechanically.

On fine hair, stick to light formulas and finishing use only. On thick, dry or curly hair, the pre-wash treatment is what changes things.

What actually completes the routine

An oil replaces neither conditioner nor leave-in — it seals, it doesn't hydrate. The full sequence on damaged hair:

  1. Oil as a pre-wash treatment on lengths and ends.
  2. Shampoo, scalp only.
  3. Conditioner on the lengths, two to three minutes.
  4. Leave-in on towel-dried hair.
  5. One or two drops of oil as a finish, ends only.

And before any hot tool, a heat protectant: it's heat, far more than washing, that breaks the fibre.

Frequently asked

Can you sleep with oil in your hair?

Yes, in a loose braid on a protected pillowcase. Beyond an hour the extra benefit is small — the fibre has absorbed what it can.

Oil on the scalp: good idea or not?

On a dry, itchy scalp, a pre-wash massage helps. On an oily scalp it doesn't, and it weighs the roots down.

Do you rinse after an oil treatment?

The shampoo handles that. It's exactly why you apply it before.
